Project Overview
The Workforce Housing Forum and Report builds on previous projects (2024 North Cariboo Interim Housing Needs Assessment, and 2023 Quesnel Workforce Development Strategy) to further define current and near-term workforce housing needs, quantify the current and anticipated level of demand, clearly identify gaps in housing supply, and outline strategies and tangible actions to improve the housing inventory to meet workforce needs.
The City of Quesnel is bringing together employers, builders, government agencies, real estate experts, community organizations, and other stakeholders focused on addressing local housing challenges and opportunities.
Why This Work Matters
With major projects on the horizon, including Osisko’s proposed Cariboo Gold Project and a new long-term care facility, demand for both diversity and quantity of housing options is expected to increase. The Workforce Housing Forum will provide an opportunity to share insights, discuss challenges, and help shape strategies that support housing development and economic growth in the community.
The discussion will build on the City's ongoing efforts to increase housing options through initiatives such as the Multi-unit Housing Tax Exemption program, pre-reviewed secondary dwellings, land sales, and pre-zoned development properties. Together, these conversations will help inform future actions to ensure Quesnel remains an attractive place to live, work, and invest.
Expected Outcomes
Through the Workforce Housing Forum, we expect to build a clear roadmap to address local workforce housing challenges. Local government, major employers, builders, real estate experts, community organizations and other business professionals will gather to discuss how housing impacts worker recruitment and retention, barriers to housing development, and potential solutions tailored to Quesnel. By combining business experience with local housing data, we will have realistic, locally-grown plan designed to spur future workforce housing initiatives.
Quesnel Workforce Housing Survey
Quesnel employers are telling us that housing may be affecting their ability to recruit and retain workers, but we don't yet have a clear, community-wide picture of where the gaps are or how big they are. This survey is one of the ways we're gathering that information.
What this survey covers: your current workforce, vacancies, hiring plans, and how housing affects your ability to recruit and retain workers.
Who should fill it out: the person closest to hiring and retention (typically the owner, HR lead, or manager).
How your answers are used: individual responses stay attributed to your organization for our records, but everything we report publicly will be combined across all respondents. No single company's answers will be identifiable in any report or presentation.
What happens next:
- September: findings will help shape discussion at the Workforce Housing Forum.
- Fall: a final report will summarize findings and directions for Quesnel.
Your input helps build a picture of workforce housing needs in Quesnel. Thank you for taking the time to contribute.
